Whirlpool model ED22DQ/RQ
Unusual problem here. The ice maker is making hollow cubes and leaves a clump of ice in the bottom on the ice bin. Water in coming in, but it sounds like it cuts off after only a second or two. Some of the ice cubes are normal, some are hollow. Ice water comes out the door dispenser, but it's slower than before. The ice ejector thing is rotating and the ice maker arm goes up and down like always. Everything seems to be ok except the timing of the water going into the tray, and the fact that there is this huge clump of ice mess in the bottom. (Collective, compacted ice mess??? )The fridge hasn't been moved in the last 7 years, so I don't think the line is pinched. I checked the supply line inside and it was frozen at one time, but clearing it didn't help the hollow cube problem. I hear the water come in, but like I said, it just cuts out too soon (or seems to). Is this the solonoid or filter? Where to start? Thanks |

Hi Rich,
I always start by un-doing the water supply line that connects to the refrigerator back, then getting a bucket or container to run water into from that supply line to check the pressure, if its a good strong stream, then you may have a bad or clogged water valve. If its a weak stream of water, then its your supply line, those needle piercing valves can clog easy, i advise people to use the larger diameter valves.

Thanks, Jake. The water line was built into the house when it was built. I don't think it is a saddle valve, but I'll do as you suggest. It's a good place to start.
I haven't pulled it from the wall yet. If it's the valve (clogged) is that pretty easy to get to? I think I remember a filter that's in line; maybe that needs to be replaced too. Thanks for all your help in this forum. If I get the washer and fridge fixed I think my wife will be very pleased with me. ![]() |

The in-line filter could use changing too. Jake

Got around to getting the necessary inlet valve switch (dual) and replacing it. That did the trick! Ice is back to normal (no 'hollow man' ice
) and the in-the-door water stopped its drip-drip-drip.Pretty easy part to replace too, so that made it all that much nicer. I let out about 3 or 4 gallons from the water dispenser and got out a bunch of black particles. It's now running clear. I dumped the first few loads of ice and that's all coming in nice now. Ice and water in the door again . This camper is a happy oneRich |
