Unhappy super capacity 465 electric oven always on

As of last night the oven on my whirlpool will not go off. According to the panel it is not on, but there is most definitely heat still coming from the oven. I turned it off at the breaker until it cooled off completely and then flipped it all back on again. Within an hour, the oven was warm again and no buttons had been touched. Is this fixable or is it time to start shopping for a new stove?

Thanks,
Serena

Hi Serena,

Whats the model# of your range? It should be located on the front bottom frame after you pull out your storage drawer.

Sounds like your oven element may be starting to ground out, which causes a ALWAYS ON condition.

Hi Jake~
Thanks so much for assisting me with this.

The model # is RF379LXKQ. This first letter I am not 100% sure about. Maybe its a K? It is imprinted over the word Model and is difficult to read.

Anyhow, is there a way to test it to be certain that it is the element?

Thanks Serena, thats the correct model#.

You would need to ohm your bake element to the frame of your range with an ohm meter to see if its starting to ground out. You unplug your range, then pull your range out from the wall, then take off the back access panel, then you will see your oven bake element terminals with 2 wires attached to them, remove 1 wire then put 1 meter meter probe on 1 terminal end then the other meter probe of the chassis frame of your range and see if the meter reads anything, it shouldn't.

Then ohm you bake element out as well, by putting both meter probes on both of your bake element terminals, a normal bake element should read about 30 ohms.

Radio Shack sells cheap volt/ohm meters if you don't have one.

Here's the bake element for your model:

Hello Jake~
Well, it actually appears to be the broiler element that is bad. The oven element has a current, but one of the terminal ends on the broiler one is burnt off. DH broke it completely while testing it. The back of the light is burnt looking too.
So what caused this? Is it safe to replace and then continue to use the stove?

Your help is very much appreciated!
Serena

Ok,

Don't worry about the burnt area around the back of the light bulb, they all look like that.

Here's the broil element for your model you can order:

ok.....well that looks simple enough, but now both big burners on the top are not working either. First it was just one that didn't work, and the other was sort of intermittent, but now neither are working. So before we go buying parts, I guess its best to find out how much those parts will cost too. Is it just the burner that needs to be replaced or could it be something else?

It was here when we bough the house so at least 3 years old. I don't think the previous owners used it much though. It really hasn't been the best stove I've ever had. How expensive is it to replace the burners. I guess we are sort wondering if all this is worth fixing or not.
