Default Ice Maker not working

I have a Whirlpool side by side fridge (Model #GD5YHAXNL00). The ice maker has stopped working: it looks like the rake was stuck in the ice. I was able to pull out the maker and get rid of the ice but the rake (I think it's called) hasn't moved again. The tray isn't filling and there's no ice.

Here is a picture of what it looks like:

What are the chances of resurrecting it? It's only about 5 years old. It sounds as though this may be a common problem.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mitch,

First check your ice maker LED light inside your freezer on the right side, follow the steps I listed here:
[FIXED] Kenmore & Whirlpool Ice Maker LED Blinking Codes & Online I/M In-Door Repair Manual

If the optics check good, then the problem is your ice maker, you would need a new one.

Here's the ice maker for your model in case you need to order it:
Complete icemaker assembly

Manufacturer's Part#: 2198597

Here's the instructions TO change the ice maker assembly:

1. Remove the bucket from the door to get some room.

2. Put a piece of tape on the sensor flapper to hold it down so you won't damage it while removing the ice maker.

3. Remove the ice maker service cover door by spreading the two hinge fingers apart away from the center and the door should lift out of the slot.

4. Remove the screw in the right rear bottom side of the ice maker.

5. After removing the screw that cover should lift up from the rear and just work it out from the rear and you see the electrical harness.

6. On the left track the should be a tab toward the bottom which you need to push up.

7. Push up tab and start working the ice maker towards you pulling it out of the track.

8. Careful with the electrical harness in the back as you're pulling out.

9. Disconnect the electrical plug by lifting the clip on the plug.

10. Remove the side cover on the side module by pulling off.

11. Remove the bottom shield by removing the 3 screws on the bottom.

12. To install reverse the order as it came out.

Jake,

When I open the freezer door, the LED blinks twice with a one second pause and then 2 blinks, etc.
When I push the flapper down, the LED turns solid (no blinking).

Does that mean that it's alright?
Any idea what causes these ice makers to go bad so quickly?

Yes,

If the LED is on steady: The optics are working properly.

So you would need the new ice maker.

Nope, no rhyme or reason to it, some go out 10 years, so go out in 5 years, some in 1 year.

I don't know why some last longer than others.
