Default Whirlpool electric range - Oven (Bake light) does not stay ON

This model may not be recognized as it is a CDN model WEP83801. It is an electric range with a CERAN top, the knobs are rotary and there is an LCD display in the middle that shows the time, and has buttons on either side for setting the oven timer.

Basically, when I set the control knob to Bake, and then the temp knob to say 350F, it works fine for a while and then the bake light goes out. I open the oven and the bottom filament goes out. I have to move the temp button to say 400F for the Bake light to come back On and then move it back a bit to about 375F to get as close to 350F without the Bake light going out again and of course the bottom filament also. But again, after a while, (the time can vary), the Bake light goes Off again.

Also the knob to set the oven to Bake seems not properly aligned with label 'Bake'. It looks to be off a bit.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi,

So when the bake light goes out and it stops heating when it gets to 350, do you give it time to see if it will cycle back on to maintain 350?

You are probably right Jake. I did notice now that the bake light came back On. I thought the ranges on top were only cycled Off and On. I did not realize that oven is also cycled to achieve the proper temperature.

Yes, all ovens have to cycle as well to maintain the constant temperature that you set it at.

I know I reported this sometime ago but it seems that the knob when set to bake is not registering properly.

My impression is that there is a bit of play in the rotary knob?

The oven is not cycling properly, when it cycles OFF, it does not come back ON. We have to play with the rotary knob for a bit so it catches at the bake setting.

Is typical for the rotary knob to be problematic ... if so, is this a straight forward replacement of just the rotary knob itself?

Yes either the knob or the oven thermostat. Take off the knob while its baking and see if it does the same thing, if it does, then its a bad oven thermostat.

Thanks for the quick response Jake, I will give it a try and let you know.

By the way, my mom has reported sometime that she sees sparks in the oven when it is being used. I'm not sure if it is either when the oven door is being closed or open, or just during baking. What comes to mind when you hear reports of sparks or sparking in the oven?
Perphaps the heat filament has a loose connection, but the wiring would be contained outside of the oven compartment.

Sparks in the oven means the oven bake element is wearing out, turn the breaker off to your range/oven and feel all around the bake element when its cool, check for bumps or pits in it.
