Default Whirlpool filter housing

I moved into a house that has a Whirlpool ED5SHAXMQ00 side by side refrigerator with ice and water in the door and a filter that mounts from the front under the unit. Eventually I realized that the previous owners did not have a filter in there, so I bought one (4396508), but I'm having problems.

The filter goes in all the way, but when i try to turn it it seems to be stuck. I put a little force into it, enough to start galling up the plastic tabs on the filter, but it won't budge.

My assumption is the filter housing (2186443) is jammed. Is this something that happens? I'm pretty sure I have the right filter.

Also, I tried to take the housing off, but I'm not sure how to remove the in and out water lines. They look like they're just pressed in and I could pull or pry them out, but not being sure I didn't want to break them.

Thanks in advance!

Oh, one other note in case it matters, the water and ice in the door work fine now, they're just obviously not being filtered.

Thats odd,

Yes, thats the correct water filter for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: 4396508

4396508

Did you put the #30 handle on it and push it in then turn it?:

Ok, then yes, it sounds like something in the filter housing is broken then.

Here's the filter housing for your model, you can order it:
Manufacturer's Number: 2186443
2186443

Hi Jake,

I have not seen a problem with one of these housing myself, but I have a feeling there is something going on with them.

In just the last few weeks we have been selling a number of replacement housing.

It would be great if elitheiceman could take a closer look at the old one when he gets it out and let us know what happened with it.

Will do, I'll let ya know what I find out.

Can either of you answer how to remove the waterlines? Do I just pry them out of the old housing?

Thanks again

Yes AJ, even back when I worked for Sears I had a few of these filter housings either leak or not be able to lock-in the filter properly.

Its been awhile since I changed the filter housing, but if I remember correctly you just push-in on the o-rings where the water line goes in, then while your pushing in, pull the water line out, pull hard.
