Default Whirlpool, Compressor not running

Hi,
Compressor quit on a 2 yr old whirlpool refridgerator, I took the back off and heard clicking, took the inverter box off and noticed the plastic was discolored like it was burnt. I ordered a new one through Sears, it was there the next day and I installed it, fridge works now. It's my first time behind a fridge, now that it is working I noticed the compressor gets very hot, almost too hot to touch. Also, the little fan to the right of the compressor was not running. I assume it runs when it needs to...am I correct? Also, is the compressor supposed to be this hot? BTW, I cleaned the coils underneath, they were filthy. Thanks in advance.

Troy

Editing to include fridge model number...GC5SHEXNS03, and part was inverter box, compressor control.

Hi Troy,

Is this the inverter box you installed:
Manufacturer part number W10133449 is RepairClinic item number 1381553
W10133449

The condenser fan motor that sits next to your compressor should be running at all times while your compressor is running.

So it sounds like you will need a new condenser motor, here's the one for your model you can order:
Manufacturer part#W10124096 is RepairClinic item#1378525

Thanks Jake,

Yes, that is the part I installed and I will order the part you specified. I just unplugged the fridge so I won't have the same problem. Last question, am I right to assume that the inverter box could have burnt because that fan motor went out? Great site, and thanks for the quick reply.

Yes Troy, thats likely why the inverter box went out, because of heat overload due to the condenser fan motor not running.

Keep us posted when you get the new fan motor.

Hi Jake,

Installed the new fan motor, but it looks like the fan is not running. The compressor is running, cooled the fridge and freezer to the preset temps, and has been running for 24 hours, but now the temperature is starting to climb in the fridge and freezer. The compressor is still running, but I can tell the fan has never turned (I marked one of the blades with nail polish). The compressor is really hot to touch, and I have another fan blowing on it to keep away the hot air, but obviously something else is wrong. Help again, and thanks in advance.

Ok Troy,

Then you will need the compressor control board assembly, it sends power to the condenser fan motor:
Manufacturer part number 2307028 is RepairClinic item number 1058823
2307028

its #19 here:

Jake,

I don't need anything, I just threw the fridge off the balcony. (I kid, I'll order that part and keep you posted) Will the repair clinic let me return any of these parts that I don't need...I assume my original fan motor is good still.

Hi Jake,

It's been a while, we moved and this refridgerator has been in storage. It's back in action now and I ordered the compressor control board. I am behind the fridge now, how do you get to where the board is to replace it? I had a fan running to keep the compressor cool, but now there is a beeping coming from behind the fridge and I believe the compressor only works part time as the temp in the fridge is climbing. If I unplug it and reset it it cools again, then a few hours later it shuts off and the temp starts to climb again and the beeping starts. I assume the control board will take care of everything, including power to the fan motor that I replaced back in July. I just don't know where it is located. Anyway, thanks for your help in advance, it is greatly appreciated.

Troy

The control board sits beside the invertor board on the left as your facing the back of the fridge. It's tucked in behind the rail on the left side.
