Default Whirlpool DU1145XTPQ6 - making loud noise during wash cycle

On February 19, 2006, I purchased a Whirlpool Dishwasher (Model #DU1145XTPQ6) from Lowes. For about 1.5 years, the machine performed well, for it was quiet and cleaned dirty dishes quite well. As a small family of three, the machine receives normal residential use and has never been abused.

In October 2007, we began to notice a loud noise radiating from the machine during a wash cycle, so we called a local repairman. The repairman diagnosed the problem and replaced Whirpool part #8535760. After the repairs, the machine performed well again, (i.e., it cleaned dirty dishes well and operated quietly again). That is, until two months ago, and the strange loud noises again began. The machine still cleans dishes acceptably; however, it makes strange, loud noise. As an aside, after running the dishwasher yesterday, I discovered two nuts in my garbage disposal (look like 1/4 – 20 nuts).

What’s the deal? Is the main motor dying again or is more than that? Do you have a repair manual for the machine that I can download?

Thanks for your help. Eric

Hi Eric,

Here's the repair manual for your model:
www.applianceblog.com/manuals/pointvoy8178022.pdf

Sounds like the motor impeller broke.

If that is the problem, do I need to replace the entire motor/pump assembly or is there a different part (number?) that I need? Is it easier to gain access to the pump/motor by pulling dishwasher out and working on it in the garage or by pulling the pump/motor through the washtub? Which one is more likely to leak, break something, ...

Thanks,
Eric

I always replace the motor/pump assembly(sump assembly) when I do them, much easier, less time consuming.

Here's the sump assembly for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: 8535150

8535150

The sump/motor assembly costs more, but easier to install.

Start reading at Page#20 at the repair manual link I posted above, it explains how to change it.

I just leave the dishwasher in place when I change them, but I've changed so many I'm used to doing them in place. But for someone who has never changed it before, it may be better to take the dishwasher out to change it.

How do I know if the above diagnosis is the problem? In other words, what else can I do to narrow in on the problem to ensure that I correct/fix the problem the first time around, rather than "easter egging" the thing or playing "whack-a-mole"? Can I pull the sump/motor assembly as described in the book (beginning on page 20), and tear apart anything else to ensure that I've got the problem figure out before replacing parts? If so, where would you start?

Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric,

I always first check the chopper screen assembly. If thats ok and the noise is happening while its washing, then its the motor/motor impeller thats causing it.

As for the nuts you found in your garbage disposal, I have no idea where those came from, unless the previous tech. didn't tighten something well enough when he changed your motor.

Any part your order through our site has a 30 day FULL refund, even if you already installed it, and it doesn't solve the problem, just uninstall it and return it.

Its extremely difficult to exactly pinpoint what the problem is on just this forum without me coming to your house to see, but I give you all the repair manuals and problems I've seen happen that should help you narrow down this issue.

Page 17 Read 1-4 where it says this:

SERVICING COMPONENTS INSIDE THE WASH TUB
Removing the Inner Feed Tube and
Lower Spray Arm

Then on Page 21 it starts to get into detail of how to access the rest where it says this:
Accessing Components of the Sump Assembly

It shows how to get access to the chopper screen.

Chopper Part#8268383

Jake,

It's been a month since we last discussed the above problem. I check the chopper assembly, but found no issues and the noises continue. Unfortunately, I have not had the time to do anything else (business trips), yet my wife is still using the dishwasher. My question is easy...what is the worst thing that can happen by operating the machine in this degraded condition....will the motor/pumo seize, catch fire, spring a water leak, or all of the above???

Thanks again for all of the help.

Eric

No worry about fire or leaking, just the noise issue and you may start seeing less sump/motor power to clean the dishes.

OK...the thing finally seized (I think)...it fills with water but just sits there and hums... Will FSP part # 3369330 replace Manufacturer's Number: 8535150? I can get the FSP part for free from a friend who claims that it will work... Is that true? Is it an exact replacement or will have to modify something? Thanks again for your help.

No, that motor won't work on your model, not even modifying it would do any good.
