My 1996 Whirlpool uprighht freezer drain continually ices up, I have thawed it several times but it always comes back. I put bleach down the drain once a month and the last time I thwed her out I tried to run a thin wire down the drain but it only goes in about one inch. Drain is located inside the freezer and at back of freezer cabinet in a "V" shp drain cavity. Is there a check valve or trap that prohibits me from rodding this drain out? If so how can I clear it?

Hi Bubba,
I always like to use 1/4" plastic water line tubing to run down that drain line, you can buy that at any hardware store, you can always ask them for a small metal drain router that will snake down it as well. Jake

Thanks, I will try that. I have some flexible plastic drain tubing in my garage and if that does not work, the small snake sounds good.

My mom's Whirlpool upright freezer recently developed the same problem. We tried pouring clorox down the drain and it flows down into the drain pan after the freezer has thawed, but the drain is clogged again about a week later. We have repeated 2 or 3 times. Did the plastic tubing solve the problem?
