My 3 year old dishwasher has a noise that starts when the motor runs. I will describe the noise as a loud, low pitched hum. It's pretty loud.
When I start the cycle I can hear it fill, the noise starts when the motor kicks in. When I cancel the cycle, I can hear the dishwasher drain without the noise. From this I am assuming that it is not a pump motor, but the main motor.
I just want to verify before I spend $130 on a motor that my assumption sounds right to someone else as well.
Could there be another part in there that only moves when the motor is going that could make this kind of a humming sound?
Thanks

Hi Tim,
You may want to check if something is down in the chopper area, like a nut or toothpick that the chopper blade can not cut up.
I have posted a series of pictures that someone was having problems with the check valve, but the chopper area is in clear site.

I had it apart last weekend and the chopper screen and area was pretty clear, just a little lint, no popcorn, etc.
It seemed like the first wash after i put everything back together was a little quieter, then it got louder again.
My dishes do seem to be getting clean, but I was wonder about this check valve. Does it lay flat against something? It seemed like it was resting in there at an angle as in partially open perhaps, rather than flat.
Thanks

It should just push down flat in that notch to the right of the chopper, but that shouldn't make the sump make any noise whatsoever.

Its just visible to the far right, the black check valve.
Also make sure the motor impeller turns freely, not stiff.

Well, the impeller seems to turn freely and there is nothing blocking the grinder so I am going to change out the motor. I'm not sure what else it could be as the dishes are getting clean. I ran it again this moring and it starts out very loud and it seems to quiet down after a bit. Still seems odd that a motor would go out like that. I will post the results so everyone knows if it fixes the problem. Thanks for you help.

I'm trying to replace the chopper inmy Whirlpool GU1200XTKQ, but am having great difficulty removing the plastic housing that covers the chopper. According to the schematic, it looks like part #8. I can see only one screw holding it down, and then there's a plastic retaining tab at the lower right hand corner of it. I cannot get this plastic cover to budge, is there some trick? Does it pull straight up or horizontally out? Please help.

Hi Dennis,
That cover can be tough to get off, but it lifts up, i get a screwdriver and pry the very top notch up and towards the right and it comes off everytime.

I forgot to post my results....
I replaced the motor with a new one off ebay ($53 vs $130) and put it in and the noise is now gone. The impeller seemed to spin a little more freely in the old one than in the new one, but just a pinch, so I guess it was slightly worn. The only down fall is the new motor I believe hums a pinch louder than the original one back before it went out. The new one is an LG, not sure who made the original, I'd have to go look.
I was wondering though....there is no insulation along the bottom panel that screws on. It seems that this would add further sound dampening. Can it be added, or is there none there for air circulation? It seems that air would circulate along the sides just fine.

How to access motor - Whirlpool Dishwasher GU1200XTKB0
Jake,
I'm having the exact same problem as described in this post.
You've provided great info BTW, very helpful!
To check the parts in your recommendation, do I access all of these parts to the motor from inside the dishwasher? (grinder, impeller, chopper, etc...) Do I need to access any of this from under the machine? Do you recommend any continuity tests on the motor with a multitester?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Removed the jam but still having problems
I found a screw that jammed the chopper blade and kept it from spinning. However, after I removed the screw, I'm still hearing the humming noise and no water is coming out of the jets. The machine is filling and emptying fine. The chopper blade is a little rusty from the screw and very slightly rubs the chopper screen when I turn it. Could it be the chopper or do you think the motor is damaged becuase the chopper blade was jammed?
