Default GB8SHK - ice on bottom of freezer and unit is leaking water from front

Hi there,

My GB8SHK Whirlpool fridge/freezer is leaking water on to my floor in front of the unit. As well, I have noticed that an ice sheet has built up on the bottom of the freezer.

I have researched this problem and it looks like the defrost drain system is plugged.

Can anyone walk me through how to troubleshoot and hopefully fix this issue with my kind of fridge?

Thanks in advance!

remove food from freezer, take shelves out. Take back panel of freezer (lower panel) off. Chip ice out and pour water in area until clog releases. A shop vac (wet vac/ or lots of towels) will come in handy. Usually takes me 15 minutes, but give yourself an hour. I then personally take a piece of heavy gauge bare aluminum wire and hang it off the heater and about an inch into drain hole. This helps keep hole thawed during defrost. Wrap around heater a few passes. I do this as an old trick, and it works, but be very careful around that evaporator. It'll cut you fast. Please unplug first! The water freezing and ice is a result of defrost water freezing up instead of going down. After clog out, pour a 10:1 solution hot water to liquid dishsoap down drain. The dishsoap also aids in keeping things from freezing, although just slightly. There may be other techniques, but this is what I do and it's successful.
