Default Whirpool Conqest Gold Side by Side Ice Maker Problem

After reading numerous post here I still have a couple of questions reference my problem:

Model Number : GS5SHAXNL00
MFG Date: 01/05

When I first started troubleshooting my reason for no ice I noticed that frozen ice had not fully been pushed out of the tray into the side door collection container. When I attempted to remove the ice it appeared to be jammed between the rotating arms and the ice tray so I melted the ice and unplug refrigerator for 3 minutes and when I plug it back up the arms rotated to the 2 O Clock position and the tray filled with water. It has now been 4 hours later and the ice is frozen hard but still has not dispensed into the door storage container. The arms have moved from the 2 O clock position to the 3 O clock position but are not contacting the ice.

How much longer should I wait before more troubleshooting should take place?

The IR test pass when the door is open: When blocked it blinks and when unblocked a steady beam.

If you simulate door closed I get no laser beam at all is this normal. I would think that you would want a beam since that is what actually tells the ice maker to stop producing ice (correct)?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You may want to remove the ice maker and clean it all out, then restart it.

Here is the official "IN-DOOR" ice & water dispenser repair manual. Its a big file, give it time to download:

Jake,

Should the IR beam work when the door is closed because if you simulate the door closed I get NO beam?

I took your advice and removed the IM and it looks like I have a broken part.
What part do I need to fix this broken piece?

If you notice there is a broken piece to the upper right of the gear. I am pretty sure this broke out of the center of the gear.

Yes, good photo, I see that piece broken in the middle of your gear.

You will need a new module assembly, you can order it here:

I have replaced the module assembly and after I return power to the IM how long will it take to complete a harvest process and fill the tray with water? Will this happen after the install or will it take a while?

It seems to be working fine now after replacing the module but why could I have not just bought the pin that was broken instead of having to buy the whole assy?

LOL, Don't get me started!!! Just kidding!

I think it has alot to do with economics, production, and profits.

It would cost more to make and produce a pin and sell it for a dollar.

But hey, this is America, if you or someone can make a pin and sell it in place of that whole assembly and make money, then your way ahead of the game, and you will be a millionaire as well.

I'm glad you got it fixed and working again tadpole88.

I didn't want to get you started, BUT. I've had these same two parts fail on our Kenmore ice maker and I believe it's simple greed on the part of Whirlpool. Those plastic gear & shaft assemblies are probably made in lots of 100,00's (along with other parts) for production requirements for the ice makers they make. It would not be that difficult to make extras (along with other parts) available for repair purposes. These two parts in particular seem to have a very high failure rate and forcing the consumer to buy the "module" on top of an expensive service call is, in my opinion, unconscionable.
What is even more amazing is that you can buy a new ice maker kit (with extras) for almost the same price as the "module". Keep the broken ice maker for parts. The bi-metal (low failure rate) is worth $20 (which I had to replace), the heater element (very low failure rate) and the drive motor (rare failure rate) all have value.
I was a Whirlpool service tech for almost 15 years so I can speak from experience. I believe the customer should be treated fairly by having a repair done at the lowest cost.
OK, let the editing begin. Hey Whirlpool, are you listening?
