Default GS5SHAXNB00 ice maker problem

MY two year old Whirlpool side-by-side stopped making ice. I removed the ice maker thinking I might just replace the whole unit. I closed the door switch, cleared infrared path and measured the voltage between the two middle pins on the cable. It measured about 58 volts. Shouldn't it be 110 volts? Is there something else that should be checked before I concluded the problem is in the Ice maker unit?

Yes, it should be 110-120 volts.

Read over this thread, it has an online repair manual in it that should help you test it further:

I read this and all related threads, but I didn't see any reference to low voltage. I did check out the blinking light, and it seems to be working properly. I couldn't do the T-H jumper test because I didn't see how to do it. What are the functions of each of the four wires going to the ice maker.

Thanks for your help.

Jake, disregard the last message. I found the information on how to perform more tests. I will get back to you later.

I tried jumpering T & H and the motor did not run. I measured the voltage between N & L and got about 58 volts. Now what?

Ok, then that means you will need new sensor boards.

Here are the boards you can order, they come together in 1 kit with instructions:
P.C. Board kit, emitter & receiver

Jake,

I've ordered a new set of boards from RepairClinic.com. I'll let you know how they work out. Thanks for your help.

I'm curious how these boards can effect the supply voltage to the ice maker unit. The power carrying wires to the Ice maker look considerably larger than any of the wires to the sensor boards, so it doesn't look like the power could be routed through the boards. Do these boards control something else, that is in the power path, that could be dropping the voltage? Is this something you can explain to a novice like me?

George

Jake,

I may have answered my own question. I made a typical novice mistake and only looked at part of the picture. I had only looked at the left sensor board and it only had small pins on the connector. The right sensor board has wires as large as the power wires going to the ice maker unit, so the power is probably routed through that board which could be causing the voltage drop.

Did you measure the voltage with the ice maker unplugged from that connector your ice maker plugs into? If you are getting 120 volts at that plug without the ice maker plugged into it and you only read 58 volts with the ice maker plugged in, then chances are that module is bad, not the boards, but from your first post I thought you tested it with the ice maker unplugged and only got 58 volts like that.

Did I miss understand you? Its ok anyways, if the new boards don't fix it, you just return them for a full refund and order the Ice Maker Module here:
Icemaker control module kit

Thats why I like referring people to Repair Clinic, you can return any part within 30 days if it doesn't fix it.
