Whirlpool ice maker water fill tube and cup freezing up - ApplianceBlog.com

Recently the ice maker in my Whirlpool side-by-side #ED25QFXHW02 refrigerator stopped making ice. I found the water fill tube and cup/bearing assm. frozen solid with ice. I thawed all of the ice from the tube and cup, and the ice maker proceeded to make ice once again. But not so fast, after only a couple of new batches of ice, the tube and cup once again froze solid. I once again thawed both the cup and tube, and the ice maker once again produced a couple of batches of ice, only to have the cup and tube freeze solid once again. Any thoughts? I'm thinking that the ice maker is calling for water before the previous batch if ice is ready to be ejected and a s result the water fills the cup and tube, freezing before it can run into the ice tray. But why? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Have you changed your water filter in your refrigerator lately? If the filter starts clogging, it will decrease the water pressure and cause this.

I did recently change my water filter, maybe a month ago, do you think I may have a bad filter?

No, you shouldn't have a bad filter.

Did you run 10 glasses of water through your water dispenser after you changed it, to get the air out of the lines?

Yes, I ran more than 10 classes of water after changing the filter. The water dispenser on the door seems to be running at full strength as well. Perhaps I have a slight blockage between the filter and the freezer compartment? Any other ideas?

The only other thing I can think of would be your water inlet valve is malfunctioning.

Hi,
Is the water going to your refrigerator at decent pressure? The valve requires a minimum of 20 Lbs of water pressure to properly seat. If less than that is available, the valve might not seat and a small leak will start. The drips will freeze in the fill tube causing the problem you found.
In that is not the case then... well, this is going to sound kind of goofy but get some aluminum foil and make a column coming off the top of the fill cup of the icemaker up to the top of the freezer around the fill tube, leave an air gap around the tube. This will keep the cold air from blowing directly on the tube and freezing it. Sounds goofy but it does work in most products. I think a replacement fill tube is available if this continues to be a problem.

Ack! I have the exact same same backfill/freeze problem which started when the water pressure to our house was lowered b/c of a new water heater. How would I test the water pressure at the valve?
