Default Whirlpool oven SM988PES won't heat

The owner's guide was printed in 1987. The oven won't heat above 200. We figure the heat is from the ignitor. We can see the ignitor glow and we get a slight smell of gas. The broiler works. It used to happen occasionally, but now after two or three times in a row of not heating, I don't dare start a batch of bread.

My husband is a mechanic. He's good at this stuff, but we can't figure it out. Is there a part that needs to be replaced? Is there something we can fix? Would we be better off buying a new oven? Would it be more effecient?

Thank you for any help you can give us!

Yes, it sounds like your bake glow bar igniter has gone bad.

Here is the one for your model:
Part#786324

Its fairly easy to install, just take out the bottom piece of your oven, then the flame shield, then you will see it mounted next to your oven burner.
