Hi all.

I've had a Kenmore 80 series for many years, and over time it got to the point that it wouldn't spin without making a grinding noise.

Long story short, I replaced the gearcase with a brand new Whirlpool part (3360629), and now it sounds nice and smooth on spin but is loud on agitate and really loud on drain. Here's a vid showing the drain and spin sounds:

Is my new gearcase a dud? Is there something I've assembled incorrectly?

Separate the motor from the trans and hold it with your foot. Start the motor in a spin cycle and see if it's the motor making the noise.

Thanks for the reply!

I haven't done the test you described, but it's definitely the gearcase. Here's what happens when I drive both of the gearcases with a drill on the bench:

Old transmission (I'm replacing because it won't agitate under load):

New transmission:

You need to make the video public before we can see it. If it's coming from the trans then it's the trans.

For some reason I can't edit my posts now. Anyway, this is weird. I sent these links to someone else and they were able to open them, so if people can't open these I have no idea what the issue might be:

Gearcase in washer during drain/spin:

Old (smooth) gearcase on bench in agitate:

New (noisy) gearcase on bench in agitate:

Your new transmission is defective, contact the place where you got it from and they will send you another one free of charge.
