Replaced the lid switch yesterday, but that didn't fix it. What's next? Timer? Transmission?
I have a video of the issue, hopefully I can post it without issue. It makes noises and water is draining, but it's not spinning. Open and close and it's good to go.

For more context, I actually had someone out yesterday as the washer was leaking water on the floor. They couldn't find any issues for the leak. Rather than eat the $100 service call, I also recalled this spinning issue I had. Boom now I'm out $200 to replace this switch and it didn't fix it. Ironically, I work for an appliance store and can get a nice discount on a new, open box or scratch and dent appliance. Facepalm.

On that washer design the motor must pause between agitate and spin. That pause is built into the timer. If the timer is not doing that pause, the timer is defective and would need to be replaced to correct the condition.

I can get a nice discount on a new, open box or scratch and dent appliance.

That might be the route to go however it would be a shame as the washer you have is a pretty reliable design, possibly more reliable than many new washer designs.

I appreciate the response. Maybe I'll try the timer. I think I was looking at the right thing and it was very pricey. Do you mind linking me? I see some used ones on ebay, but that would be a risk....

Reporting back.
Replaced lid switch, timer, and transmission. Also new motor couplers. All OEM parts. The issue is still happening. what else is there?

Replaced timer

You replaced the timer to solve this immediate problem and not just at some time in the past?

You replaced the timer with a brand new part?

If the timer isn't pausing the motor to initiate the spin and using the lid switch to pause the motor does work to initiate spin, I'm afraid I don't know anything else that could be responsible besides the timer. The pause between agitate and spin is key and it is supposed to be done by the timer. If the timer isn't... no spin. I do not know any other component that could prevent the timer pause.

A problem with transmission, lid switch and coupler would permanently affect the spin and would not be affected by opening the lid as was stated in the message title, "washer doesn't spin unless you open and close lid".

I'm afraid I have nothing else to suggest.

Yes Dan is exactly correct.

Here's another thread I helped someone on too with this same issue:

After all of this..... Was it just working as designed for a neutral drain? If you watch the video, it sounds like it should spin but it doesn't spin until you lift lid then it spins. How does a neutral drain work normally?

How does a neutral drain work normally?

The washer agitates. After wash it pauses briefly then starts to drain. Once most of the water has drained, the timer pauses briefly again. When the motor starts running again it will then spin... while continuing to drain (ie. it is in 'neutral' when it drains.).

This arrangement prevents the washer from overloading the motor and drive system trying to spin while still full of water.
