Kenmore 80 Series - making racheting noise during spin cycle. Once spin builds up speed, it makes a loud bang and the agitator pauses then start to spin again. I can hold the agitator (either completely stopping it or just slowing it down a bit) during the spin cycle and tub will spin just fine. Upon inspection, I found a broken off gearcase bolt. I was able to remove the broken thread and replace the bolt. Still rachet sound and bang during spin cycle. What is puzzling is the grasping the agitator and it working fine.

Thanks Rick. I guess I'll start with that. Should I be able to stop the agitator from spinning during the spin cycle or is that what is indicating a worn clutch assembly?

Yes, you can stop the agitator during spin

My washer is doing exactly what you described. Did changing the clutch help?
