im currently in the middle of my first ever appliance repair on my older kenmore (not sure the year) after it stopped heating up.

turns out that the thermal cut off and the heating element were both shot so I’ve gone ahead and put in a new element and smacked the cut off back into place.

now as I’m reconnecting wiring I’m at a total loss!! I forgot to take a photo of the wires before disconnecting but by watching videos and looking at some useful posts on this blog I think I’ve got them connected right—except I’m missing a cord. Now it’s possible that the cord has gone missing (I have a cat, vacuum??) but I could’ve sworn that there was never a black cord in there. so my first question is.. I bought it used years ago, is it possible that the dryer was set up and working without this connection?

second question is…how can I get a replacement cord? I’m assuming that I need a specific type to make this connection ?

I attached a phot of the circuits with the missing wire circled and a photo of my machine currently.

Run? Yes. Heat? No.

A local appliance parts supplier can probably make a jumper for you. Calculate a generous length and tell them 14-16 gauge wire with a 1/4" female spade terminal on each end. You could even request black wire to match the wiring diagram.

Thanks for the reply! I’m going to call around and try to find someone who can make me the part.

last night I went ahead and connected as I remembered it, with nothing connected to the thermal cut off and instead the other red wire connected directly to the hi temp thermostat to test it. turns on, heats up just fine since the circuit is closed. confirms that I never had the black wire in the first place!

It’s my understanding that this is completely unsafe and I feel very freaked that I’ve been using the dryer for the past two years without this safety component being connected.

That's not even the right wiring diagram for your model. Here is a different model that takes the same wiring diagram as yours: Here is your wiring diagram for your model.Same one as in that link!

thank you! You are right, luckily the heating element wiring is identical on both diagrams

Yet not connected like that on yours.

Without the high limit and safety cutout connected, I agree! Do NOT use it that way!
