Hello, I have a Kenmore 80 series gas dryer. Over time it was taking longer and longer to dry and eventually it just stopped heating completely. I checked resistance on all electrical sensors and the fuse and they all seem to check out Ok. I then noticed that there was no flame in the burner. I tested the resistance on the coils and they also seemed to be in the acceptable range. I saw that the coils may be bad even though they show the resistance so I replaced a pair of the coils after which the gas started to come out and the flame came on.

I tried using the dryer after replacing the coils but it didn't work. The flame seem to be weak, it would come on some times and other times it wouldn't. The igniter is always glowing red and seem to cycle correctly. I took out the drum and the front panel and turned on the dryer, I saw the igniter glowing then I assume the flame sensor switch then the coils clicked and a decent flame came out of the burner. The flame stayed on and steady. Not knowing what else to look for I put the drum and the front panel back on and turned the dryer on again to test. A weak flame came out and went out in 10 seconds or so. This pattern would continue to cycle. All above I did while vent was disconnected from the dryer and I previously cleaned the exhaust inside the dryer with a vacuum and there is no noticeable clogs. There is a good air stream coming out of the blower and the blower wheel seems intact.

Out of ideas I took out the exhaust air channel to make sure there were nothing clogging the airflow and it was clear. With the exhaust channel off I turned on the dryer and saw the same decent quality steady flame that I saw when the drum and front panel were off. When I put it back on the flame went back to weak disappearing pattern. Last thing I did was turning the dryer on fully assembled and opened the front door while it was on (spinning). I jumped the door switch for the dryer to stay on. Strangely, when I open the front door the flame stays on and is noticeably stronger. When I close the front door the flame goes out within a couple of seconds.

I am totally lost and would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

Hi, Did you buy OEM gas coils?

Like I mentioned in that thread:
Its either 1 of 2 things causing it.

If the flame is lazy and not strong, it will overheat the hi-limit thermostat and cut off prematurely. So first pull your dryer away from the wall, and take off your exhaust hose from the back of your dryer, then run it with no clothes in it and see if the gas flame stays on longer and cycles off and on normally.

If it still doesn't then your gas coil solenoids are bad. You gas coils can ohm test good, but still be mechanically bad.

Here's the OEM gas coil assembly for your model:
Gas Valve Solenoid 279834

A lazy flame indicates poor air flow through that burner tube, thus usually a clogged vent or vent exhaust.

If you pulled the dryer away from the wall and the air flow was strong out the back of your dryer, then the flame shouldn't be lazy, if the gas is still cutting off prematurely or the flame doesn't come back on again, then the gas coils are bad.

The front panel has to be in place while the exhaust vent is disconnected.

Hi, thank you for your reply.
Did you buy OEM gas coils?
Yes I got them at a local appliance store.

If you pulled the dryer away from the wall and the air flow was strong out the back of your dryer, then the flame shouldn't be lazy, if the gas is still cutting off prematurely or the flame doesn't come back on again, then the gas coils are bad.

I did pull the dryer away and the airflow out the back felt strong. I suppose the issue must be the faulty coils so I ordered the one you recommended.

I will give the new coils a try once they arrive.

I am curious, could the issue be with the gas valve?
Possibly, Here's the gas valve assembly for your model:

I located another thread that is doing basically the same as yours: FIXED: MGDC200XW0 Maytag only sometimes ignites first heat cycle then ignitor glows but no flame

And you can see on the 2nd page of that thread, the new gas valve assembly fixed his. Whirlpool owns Maytag and Whirlpool makes the Kenmore 110 model, and his Maytag uses the exact same gas valve assembly as yours does.

Your Welcome!
