Default Dead Dryer - Kenmore Elite HE4 110.8586

    Model Number: 110.85871400
    Brand: Sears Kenmore
    Age: 6-10 years

    Hello.

My dryer is dead. It worked fine yesterday.

It does not turn on. The interior light does not come on.

    It is receiving power.

It has three faint lights that come on.

Check out the pictures to see the lights:

If you can make it out or not, 2 little lights come up on the oval area under where it says "Estimated Time Remaining"

Also the area where it says "Extra Low" it lights up as well.

Other than that it is completely dead.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Jimbo

    Hi Jimbo,

Did you try to plug something like a hair dryer in the same outlet as your dryer, just to make sure its not an electrical issue, if its a gas dryer?

Is this a gas or electric dyer?

If its an electric dryer, unplug it from the wall and look inside where your power cord hooks up to it to make sure one of the 3 power cord wires didn't burn/arc and come loose, as its very rare for the inside dryer drum light to go out as well when the control panel flakes out.

There should be a few more numbers after the "6" at the end of your model#.

If your power is good to the dryer, then its possibly a control panel problem or control board problem.

Here is the online repair manual for the Kenmore HE4/Duet dryer: https://www.applianceblog.com/manuals/Duetdry.pdf

Try to run the diagnostics in section 6.

I'm attaching the simplified diagnostics sheet below(Page 10 tells how to take the bottom panel off):

Page 8 has the button & LED test.

    Hi Jake,

    Thanks for the reply.

Sorry for the incomplete information in my first post.

The dryer is an electric dryer. The complete model number is 110.85871400. I do not have another appliance in my house that I could use to test the power. I did however check all the circuit breakers on my inside and outside panel and everything looks ok.

I took a picture of the wires and I don't see any burned or arced wires.

I attempted to enter diagnostic mode as described in the 2 manuals you provided links for. Unfortunately nothing happens whatsoever. The same 3 faint lights just stay on.

If it is a control panel or control board problem, what is the best way to get this fixed? I bought this dryer at sears 4.5 years ago. It has no warranty. I need to get it fixed in the next week as I am going out of town for a few months and I can't leave my wife home with a broken dryer.

Sears wants $70 to even come look at it. Approx how much will Sears charge for control panel or control board if that is the problem?

    Thanks again,
    Jimbo

Ok, thanks Jimbo, the power wires look fine.

Here's the control board for your model you can order:
    WP8546219 Control Board

You can return it if you install it and it didn't fix it for a full refund within 365 days.

Here is the online repair manual for the Whirlpool Duet dryer: https://www.applianceblog.com/manuals/Duetdry.pdf

It shows how to get access to the control board on page 4-2 through 4-4.

Unplug or turn the breaker off to your dryer first.

Here's the control panel for your model:

    Hi Jake,

    OK, the strangest thing...

I called a repair man and scheduled an appt for today. I told my wife to get the towels out of the dryer in case the guy had to take it apart or whatever.

No sooner does the repair man call to say he is 15 minutes out, the dryer starts working totally normally. The only thing different was that the stuff was out of the dryer. I put the towels back in and it seems to be working fine. The interior light is still out, but I think that has been out for years.

I will have the guy take a look at it and we'll see what comes out of it.

    Thanks again,
    Jimbo

Well the repair man could not find anything wrong with the dryer. He said that perhaps the last settings button that was pushed, which was "Touch Up" may have gotten stuck pushed in and caused such an error.

I showed him the pictures that I posted here and he did not know what that meant either.

    Hopefully it never happens again.

Thanks again for all the info.

Oh another thing in your photo of the terminal block, see the middle terminal where you have the white and green wire there? The white wire should be there only, the green wire is your ground wire and it should attach to the other green wire on the cabinet with that existing green wire.

i had this same issue ... 2 little dim vertical lines on the 'time remaining' section; and several of the other lights were lit up dimly. I fixed it by installing a new front panel control assembly (i first tried replacing the machine control electronics board, but that didn't fix it)

Cool HAIRDRYER did the trick. Big savings$ Thank You

    Thanks Jake,

It took only a few minutes to remove the top and front panel and hit it with the lady's hair dryer for a few minutes and the 11 went away on the display and work like new. Thanks.
