Default Kenmore gas dryer will not stay lit

    Model Number: 110.73022100
    Brand: Sears Kenmore
    Age: 6-10 years

Hi all. Hope you can help me here. I have searched these forums, learned much, but cannot seem to find the same problem I have. Note that this is my first ever foray into gas dryer operation and repair, so I am starting with almost no knowledge (and no operational manual for the dryer).

Here is what I have figured out. I push the start button on the dryer, the glow coils come on, the gas ignites, the glow coils go off, the gas runs for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and then goes off.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing the gas to go off so quick or what I should look for.

Note: dryer model is Kenmore Elite 110.73022100

Its either 1 of 2 things causing it.

If the flame is lazy and not strong, it will overheat the hi-limit thermostat and cut off prematurely. So first pull your dryer away from the wall, and take off your exhaust hose from the back of your dryer, then run it with no clothes in it and see if it stays on longer and cycles off and on normally.

If it still doesn't then your gas coil solenoids are bad.

Here's the gas coil kit for your model you can order here:

    Watch this video:

A lazy flame indicates poor air flow through that burner tube, thus usually a clogged vent or vent exhaust.

If you pulled the dryer away from the wall and the air flow was strong out the back of your dryer, then the flame shouldn't be lazy, if the gas is still cutting off prematurely or the flame doesn't come back on again, then the gas coils are bad.

Unplug or turn off the breaker to your dryer before changing the gas coils.

Default Similar symptoms but heat stays on longer

Hi, I have very much the same problem, but a little variation:

When the dryer is started cold, the coils glow, the gas lights, and a strong flow of warm air comes out the vent. Then after about 8 minutes of drying, the temp out the vent reaches ~155-160 F, and the flame goes out. I can only get it to reignite after resting for a period of time (perhaps 30 minutes after the dryer cools down). Sounds like a sensor? I see all four sensors (2 on the vent, 2 above the burner), but which one?

    Thanks in advance.

Jake, you're the man! I swapped out those coils, and I'm good to go. Thanks again! And Repair Clinic was great too.

It took me a while to figure out how to get to the coils, but eventually I found a schematic online showing the screws next to the lint screen, etc.

    Hey guys-
I am having the same symptoms on the Kenmore 80 series I bought from a friend last week. Lights right up from a cold start, gets hot , shuts down, and then when the ignitor coil goes to re-light it does not re-light or have any flame, then goes cold. Switch to another setting and it will re-light but shut off then not re-light again. Blower blowing. I ordered the gas coils yesterday and will be installing them Saturday. Unfortunately, wife thinks I got ripped off and has no patience- but I have to fix it before I can sell it anyhow. She is on a mission to buy a new one tonight. I will keep you apprised of my progress, so that other folks with the same symptoms may be able to fix theirs...

Well boys (and girls...?) gas coils did the trick! Put them in last night (a whopping 6 screw ordeal...) and it worked like a good gas dryer should. Unfortunately, too late for this unit as the old lady has a new one being delivered tommorrow. Good news for my neighbor though as they bought this one. Thanks a bunch for the pint in the right direction and good luck in your future fixes!
