No, the solid state relay gets hot. When the self-heating solid state relay has reached temperature it will change from low resistance 3-12 ohms to high resistance 10k-20k

Do you think I have the correct wire from the cold control connected to the compressor?

I don't know. Unplug the machine. Set your meter to check for continuity. Connect one meter lead to the neutral side of the power cord and connect the other meter lead to the wire going to the compressor from the cold control. With the cold control on, your meter should show continuity or 0. When you turn the cold control off, your meter should show no continuity or 1.
