So we have what we believe is a 1947 GE. It has been running for over a year after fixing it up. Recently it started squealing/rattling at random times and shutting down then. Could the compressor work somewhat but still be bad? It has lasted anywhere from 15 mins to 9 days before making the noise. Any help would be great as my wife is on a mission to find another one since we are clueless as to how to fix it. The back panel will heat up and the freezer box will get cold and frosty but then at random times just stop.

The short answer is yes. The compressor has some internal bearings that can wear out. If you can find someone to add some compressor oil to the system it might fix it. It needs to be done by a tech with the right tools.
