Unit is freezing up about 4 inches from bottom causing the thermostat to think it's cold so unit keeps shutting of and having to turn back on again. What would cause this?

Hi,

What would cause this?
Dirty coils, poor air flow, inefficient compressor, system leak, system restriction...the last 3 are most common :(

Restriction from what
Oil, rust/crud from inside the lines.

If it needs cleaning, where would I start?
Inside. Especially the condenser/hot tubing.

Will I need to recharge it
Not normally.

and if so, why is it low?
Only way it can be low is if the refrigeration system has a leak.

Have someone test/check the refrigeration system.

Unit was off for the last 3 days due to temp. Drop from tropical storm Barry. Turned it on this afternoon because we're back in the 90s. No ice buildup and running good so far and has been on for 5 hours. Maybe just needs cleaning?
