Default Kenmore Coldspot S/S Fridge Not Cooling

    Model Number: 106.9557652
    Brand: Sears Kenmore
    Age: 6-10 years

    Hi Jake,

My Kenmore Coldspot S/S Fridge model #106.9557652 stops cooling frequently...sometimes once every couple days, sometimes a couple times a day.

When it happens, I notice the fridge and freezer are both warmer than they should be (ice cream is soft) and I don't hear the compressor. If I toggle the temperature dial back and forth, I can get it to "re-start".

I removed the back panel in the freezer to reveal the Evaporator and there was no excess frost. I also vacuumed the coils underneath, though they weren't very bad. I don't hear a clicking sound that some people have discussed and the fridge sounds normal once it re-starts.

Do I need to do an ohm test? Or is there a theory you have based on the conditions.

    Thank you for your help!

    Tom

    Yes Tom,

Its either your cold control thermostat or your compressor start relay.

Sounds more like the cold control thermostat, since you said when you turn the temp. dial it re-starts again.

When you notice it stopped cooling open the freezer door and listen if you hear your freezer fan running, if you don't hear it, then its the cold control thermostat.

Unplug your refrigerator first before installing the new one.

Here's the cold control thermostat for your model you can order:
    Manufacturer Number 2198202

Your cold control thermostat is #9 here in this diagram:

Pull the #26 & #27 knobs off first.
    #25 trim just un-snaps
Don't worry you won't break it. Get a flathead screwdriver and just pry at a corner then it all will un-snap, and the screws are in front and underneath it.

Remove the 2 #3 screws in front and 2 underneath it.

Thanks a million, Jake. I ordered the part on Thursday, as per your instructions. Amazingly, the part arrived the next day. I installed it that evening and the fridge has been going strong ever since.

I left a nice tip in the tip jar. Thanks for being a great resource!

    Thanks Tom.

Glad the new cold control thermostat fixed it.

Default Having same problem , different model #

I'm having similar issues with Kenmore Coldspot model #106.57034601

The freezer stays too cold (even at lowest setting) and the fridge sometimes lets food get too warm,,,I have to turn dial to off for a sec then re-set temp to re-set it,, then I hear it click on and the temp drops back down.

What part # might I need to repair this? Thanks.

I'm having similar issues as well with Kenmore Coldspot model #106 serial number ER 2810248.

The freezer stays too cold and the ice maker stopped working. Then the fridge wont stay cold enough no matter what way you turn the knob. This is in a rental property of mine that I just moved out of about a month ago. The refrigerator worked fine when we lived there. I'm thinking during the 2 weeks that no one was there and no food was in the frig, something happened with the thermostat. Any suggestions???

I have a Kenmore Coldspot model 106.54589400 that has stopped cooling altogether. There is not any frost on the coils or copper tubes underneath the appliance. I can hear the fans running. Adjusting the temperature does not do anything. I have tried turning it off and then back on again too. It it a lost cause or just a replaceable part?
