I've had to defrost our self-defrosting 18 year old upright Kenmore freezer 2 or 3 times this year. Last time I took picture of ice pattern with ice build-up on floor. Defrosted drain hole, took off 18" corrugated drain tube and cleaned it out (wasn't too bad). Work OK for awhile. Last several days its been running continuously and only getting into mid 20s. We have removed 75% of items from freezer. I do not see any ice build up on the floor this time. I'm thinking time for a new freezer. Thinking chest type this time. Any thoughts if ours is salvagable?

Frosting on the evaporator should be uniform across its whole surface. Only partial frosting is usually a sign of a refrigeration system problem. If so, that would usually be a minimum of $150+ to repair and if a compressor was required, maybe $500+

Probably a good idea to go shopping.
