Default Freezer compressor not starting - no cold air

    Model Number: MFU20F3GW6
    Brand: Frigidaire
    Age: 1-5 years

It's a 20 cubic ft stand up freezer. I bought it locally from a guy who swore up and down that it worked fine and it never had any issues.

2 days after I got it, it stopped freezing. I had a guy come look at it and he said it's been tampered with in the past (it has one of those fitting put on that you can add coolant).

So what happens is it will run for a little bit and then for about 5 seconds it will act as if it's working a little harder. A relay or something also clicks around this time. The compressor never turns on.

I ordered a replacement defroster timer, but that didn't help either. Luckily I didn't put any food in it yet.

It sounds like a bad compressor. The clicking you hear is the overload.

Great.. is there anything I can test to verify that it's the compressor? Could anything other than the compressor being bad trigger the overload relay? Could the freon leaking out cause this?

It won't let me edit again so I'll make another reply. I called Frigidaire and they said my freezer was made in 09 and was still in the 2-5 year sealed system warranty. The compressor has like a 10 year warranty!

They told me I had to pay someone to come out and confirm what's wrong with it, and then the tech would work with them to get the parts he needs. Is this normally how the process goes?

Also, the guy I bought this off had a tap put in. Will that affect how whether or not the warranty is honored?

If work was done on it, that could void the warranty.

Yeah, I called around. No one will touch it. They said Frigidaire tells people their stuff is warrantied, but they won't pay any claims after the 1 year warranty ends. Like I said, I just spoke with Frigidaire earlier and they said the closed system was covered for 5 years and the compressor for 10.

So it looks like I'm on my own. Would the freon having all leaked out through the tap they put in cause the compressor to not run?

Like Rick said, Frigidaire has to honor that sealed system warranty if no one would have tapped into it, so with that sealed system tap-in Frigidaire has voided your warranty and I don't blame them.

When ever you buy a used refrigerator never ever buy it without making sure its cooling properly first and check the back where the compressor is to see if someone has tapped into it.

The problem your having is not a leak, but your compressor is shot so basically you just wasted the money you paid for it, hope you didn't pay much for it.
