    I think all you have to do after you shut the main cold water off to the water heater is open a hot water faucet in the kitchen or bathtub just to relieve the water pressure because the water from the water heater may backflush out when you take the water supply line off.

    You don't need to drain the heater. Sometimes I take a gallon or so out, just so that the water is down. You will need to open a valve somewhere to bleed off the air when done with the job. That bleeding can have spurts, which may cause splashes and pipe bump, so I would just crack the valve. Once the water runs without bumps, then increase the flow. Let run wide open for 30 seconds or a minute to get any additional air out. I tend to use the upstairs tub, but sometimes the utility sink.
