Default Bosch side by side B20CS51SNS fridge section has very different temps for each shelf

    Model Number: B20CS51SNS
    Brand: Bosch
    Age: 6-10 years

The fridge section is set to 4 Celcius on the control panel, but the inside of the fridge has wildly varying temperatures, mostly depending on shelf, but even between the left and right sides of the same shelf. The top shelf, when measuring the items with a laser thermometer, varies between 9 to 14 C. The items on the next shelf down read from 2 to 4 C, the next -1 to 3, and the drawers below that are around 8, 12, and 12C. I'm hoping this is just a fan problem, like the similar issue I had with the freezer side a few years ago, which was fixed with a new fan. But in that case the freezer was colder as you went lower, which is what I would have expected to see in the fridge if it was just a fan issue, not warmer at the top and bottom, and freezing in the middle?

The problem with using infrared thermometers to measure the temperatures in a refrigerator is most people don't know how to use them correctly. The laser pointer in an infrared thermometer is a guide that indicates where you’re pointing the instrument. When measuring the heat coming from an an object the laser helps to steady your aim and ensure that you’re close to the area you’re trying to temp. Depending on the make and model, an infrared thermometer is actually reading the temperature above, below or around where you see the laser. And depending on your infrared optics, the diameter of the area being measured will change as you get farther away from your target. This is called the optical range. Not all surfaces are created equal. Depending on what you’re pointing your infrared gun at you’re likely to get variations in emitted infrared energy. This variation is called emissivity. Emissivity is a measure of a material's ability to emit infrared energy. An infrared thermometer doesn't measure air temperature only surface temperature.

    Hi Rick,
I forgot to mention that prior to that, I used a regular thermometer on the different shelves and saw the same thing, from a vertical perspective (higher temp on top and bottom areas, and freezing temps in the middle. I know that certain areas of each shelf will freeze whatever I put there, where in other areas of the same shelf, they won't. I was using the laser thermometer last night to do a quick confirmation of which areas were approximately what temperature for the purposes of posting this information accurately, since I have been putting off posting this for the past couple years and wanted to make sure I didn't send anyone off on a wild goose chase. I will also add that prior to foods starting to freeze, I used to keep the fridge at the lowest temperature, and nothing would ever freeze. Now I have to set it to 4 to keep all of the middle shelf from freezing while still keeping the majority of the freezer below 10.

You were actually the person that helped me solve the freezer problem last time, so I value your thoughts. This doesn't seem normal to me, considering the recommendations I have seen are to keep the fridge at 4 C, so 14 C doesn't seem to be safe on the top of bottom shelves for anything other than canned beverages?

    Default Bosch Refrigerator

Check the thermistors first. I haven't heard any bad about Bosch machines but I don't know if the reason is because they're just not a popular machine or no one wants to deal with the hassles. Bosch Thermador Gaggenau has made it almost impossible to get any service information or parts for their machines unless your an authorized service center. I rarely get a service call for Bosch Machines. When I was working for a refrigeration and appliance service company that also sold used appliances, we would get a semi-trailer load of broken appliances every day, sometimes two. I would see the occasional Bosch dishwasher and less often a washer or dryer but never a refrigerator. Testing components and diagnostics is a lot different on Bosch machines. I was able to locate a service manual with a similar model number as your machine. I will attach it to this post. Hopefully it's close enough to your machine to be helpful. A note about Bosch service manuals, they are extremely hard to understand. I think they were translated from German to English by a Russian computer. If you run into a problem I'll try to help you if I can. You probably know more than I do by now. Keep us posted on your progress.
