Default Air Diffuser housing removal - KitchenAid KSRL25FXMS03

    Model Number: KSRL25FXMS03
    Brand: KitchenAid
    Age: 6-10 years

    Hi Everyone,
I needed some help figuring out how to remove the housing for an air diffuser on a KitchenAid refrigerator. I looked up info on the web and I reviewed whatever I found and youtube as well. But most housing for the air diffuser is easily removed in some models with a simple screw. However, my luck and refrigerator the housing is held in place by what I thought was a simple nut. The air diffuser housing looks similar to other housings, but this one has a small canal where I thought I can fit a socket to remove the nut, but when I took pictures of the canal it is some sort of rounded off nut? I have no idea how I would take it off, unless of course I need a special tool. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it as to inform me what kind of nut it is and what tool is necessary to remove this.

That model number doesn't come up with the "03" at the end only "00". Are you reading it from the model tag? Usually that number doesn't make a difference for those kind of parts. When I look up KSRL25FXM00 it's a different style housing and uses a phillips screw. I haven't seen that style cover before.

I also saw that same service manual and like you said every other darn model
Has the air diffuser held in place with a simple screw. But of course not mine, Kitchen had to add that security nut
To stop the free world from obtaining their technology on air diffusers. Lol. Ive been told that a star bit would do the job but a i tried a few t40 and t45 and it wont fit, looks like the bolt doesnt allow the bit to fall deep enough to loosen the security nut, very annoying.

Are you the original owner? I haven't seen a screw like that ever. Every Whirlpool diffuser I've seen it's either 1/4" or Phillips screw and I've worked on just about every model there is except for new. I think I just found the problem and why I can't get that number to come up. That's a Canadian Whirlpool. Some Canadian models we don't have information on in USA, and this is one of them. Jeff lives and has an appliance shop in Canada, he may know. You can go to Jeff's forum section here: http://www.applianceaid.com/qanda.html
