Default Problem running Window AC nonstop?

    Model Number: OTHER
    Brand: other
    Age: 1-5 years

I have a Fedders 5000 btu Window AC currently in service as a spare for a much larger 25,000 BTU unit that quit. The little guy is actually holding its own but the compressor is never able to shut off when I have it on. This is not a commercial unit and would have to say it is probably a common consumer grade model if that matters.

Is it a problem to have the compressor run nonstop for 8-10 hours or longer at a time? I assume these units are made to handle this and I know constant cycling is also bad but was curious about extended runs like this. Will this harm the unit?

I am also wondering about energy consumption vs. having a larger unit that will be able to bring the temp down enough to shut off during the heat of the day. Is running a small undersized unit constantly like this just using electricity like mad or not?

As for comfort, this is being run in parallel with another 25,000 BTU unit so is able to hold its own in that regard. I was thinking about just staying with it until the end of the summer and picking up a closeout unit unless someone here thinks this is a bad idea.

    Thanks.

No problem with that, except your electric bill will be high.

I don't know if you saw, but there was nothing wrong with the unit that was running nonstop all the time. I simply had put an undersized spare unit in position while I was diagnosing and repairing a larger main unit. It was a relatively hot period so wanted to just run the spare non-stop so it wouldn't get too hot inside. It worked pretty well for the week or so it was needed. The larger primary unit is now back in place and the weather is starting to cool off.

    Default That explains it

So it was someone trolling, etc. I thought they just hadn't read my post and thought it was running nonstop because of a problem and not it simply being undersized.

    Yes, trolling.

That's good that it worked fine for that week when it was so hot.

It is cooling down here in Arizona too:

    Today
Sunny. Highs 88 to 93. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph.

    Tonight
Clear. Lows 55 to 65. Southeast wind 5 to 15 mph.

LOL, 88 to 93 feels wonderful compared to 105 to 110 here in the desert!
