Default GSS26C4XXY02 Damper constantly cycling - fridge freezes food

    Model Number: GSS26C4XXY02
    Brand: Whirlpool
    Age: 1-5 years

This side by side is freezing food in the refrigerator side. Thermostat set at 43 and the temp inside reads between 31 and 33. All vents are clear. I notice that the damper is constantly cycling every few seconds. It blows cold air when open and closes to block airflow. I am hoping for a faulty thermistor rather than a control board. I don't have a service manual so I don't know how to run the diagnostics. I can test the thermistor if I can access it. I believe that it is located in the "6th Sense" module on the right side just inside the door but don't know how to remove it. Does it just pry off? Don't want to break anything!

Form what I can find in forums, this isn't a very common failure mode. My luck, it is the control board...

    Hi,

Does it sound like this in the video below:

If so, you will need a new diffuser, another member had this same problem: FIXED: GSF26C4EXY03 Whirlpool Fridge Making Knock Noise

Your model uses that same exact diffuser.

Here's the air diffuser assembly for your model you can order:
    Whirlpool W10814173 Diffuser

    Here's the service manual: Dropbox - W10338921 R-110 Whirlpool 2010 26_ SXS Refrigerators.pdf

Starting read at page 3-1 and it will show you how to replace it.

    Hi Jake,
No, I'm quite sure the the diffuser is fine. It is opening and closing and controlling the air flow, but is just doing it continually. My guess is that either the thermistor is bad and it's telling the control board that it is too warm, or the control board has failed and is continually sending voltage to the damper. I'll see if I can get the thermistor cover off and test it. The tech manual will definitely help. Thanks much!

I've never seen a bad thermistor keep cycling the damper door in the air diffuser, usually when a thermistor goes bad the temperature either goes to high to low.

Here's the thermistor for your model:
    W10316760 Thermistor

To test it you ohm it with a multimeter, you put the thermistor in cup of ice water for 5 minutes and it should read about 8.7 K ohms.

Also in the service manual it tells you how to run the diagnostics.

I ran the diagnostics and it tells me that the thermistors are good. I unplugged the unit for a few minutes and when I restarted it it appeared to be working properly but alas, after several hours returned to constant cycling of the diffuser. I ordered a control board and expect that it will fix the problem. I'll let you know.
