Default PEM31DM3WW Microwave made 'terrible sound' before dying...was that the magnetron?

    Model Number: PEM31DM3WW
    Brand: GE
    Age: 6-10 years

Our microwave (build date 2011) has died, no lights, control panel dark, and wife says it made a 'terrible sound' before it died. She also had complained of it making noise a while ago, which she described as 'zapping,' but that was intermittent and it never did so while I was watching.

Does that sound like the magnetron or other major component failing? I've taken it down (it hangs from the cabinet above) and found that the fuse is shot, but I am doubting if I should put any more time into it.

    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,

    which she described as 'zapping
That would have to be investigated. Could have been the stir motor, stir motor blade arcing and sparking. Food splattered on the wave guide cover. Could be the end of the magnetron tube arcing or sparking.

Thanks Jeff. The 'zapping' sound was actually earlier. I just spoke with wife a bit ago (she's out of town) and she said that before the microwave died, it made a very loud and low growling sound then shut off abruptly, which would have been the fuse going. The Repair Clinic site identifies a growling sound as being a sign of magnetron failing. It also looks a bit browned; that could be age but also might mean it's burned up. In any case that's a $175 part for a microwave that retails about a hundred dollars more so I think I'm getting a new one.
