    Default Freezer PTC starter size

    Model Number: unknown
    Brand: -major brand-
    Age: More than 10 years

I have a freezer that has a Embraco compressor model em40sc I believe this is rated at 120vac, 60hz, 1/8 hp. The PTC starter is bad and an obsolete part number with no cross reference.

"Embraco Replacement Recip. Compressor, R-12, 350 Btu, Lbp, 115-1-60, Lst EM40SC By Embraco"

Is there a method of calculating what PTC starter is required based on compressor size and voltage?

The listing I have shows PTC starters resistance values of 4.7, 12, 15, 22 and 33 ohms.

I know the resistance has to be low enough to supply starting current but then raise high enough to be negotiable once running.

Does not seem to be much information on line about matching PTC's to compressors.

    Thanks Jeff,
That would be a 4.7 ohm and I know that lots have recommended that for small fridges. Wish there was an easy way to cross ref these.

Just seems a little strange that these are all over eBay and amazon with only very general information as to what they fit.
Most of them say the 4.7 ohm one fits mini fridges and wine coolers yet the factory one in my mini fridge is a 6.8 ohm.
Even the manufacturers sites don't give you any idea how to size them.
