Question Subzero 700TFI-3V Compressor Chirping (recording attached)

    Model Number: 700TFI-3V
    Brand: Sub Zero
    Age: 6-10 years

We've got a Sub Zero freezer that had a variable speed compressor replaced a little under a year ago by an authorized SZ repair center.

Over the past couple of months, we have noticed the compressor has started making 'chirping noises' while running.

The condenser is clean and the fan is working properly. The compressor seems to run quite warm FWIW

Could one of you appliance wizards take a listen and tell me what you think? (I've attached a recording to this post and can make another if needed.)

The chirping is happening all the time and can be heard mostly at the beginning / end of the sound clip.

i.e is this normal or a harbinger of bad things to come with this compressor.

    Thank you!

I listened to the clip several times at full volume but I couldn't hear anything. However my hearing is way less than average but I don't think it matters. Inverter compressors are quiet and run at, or barely above, room temperature. You might have a problem with the inverter or the compressor. Sub Zero should have a 1 year warranty on the new compressor. Have that checked first before the warranty runs out.

Thanks Rick! I've got them scheduled to come out early next week and take a look.

The compressor runs at a normal room temperature maybe 30% of the time and then the rest of the time is really hot..

Hopefully they're able to figure out it!

It's either the inverter or the compressor.

    Hi Rick,

Thanks for your insight re my SZ 700 Freezer. I've been doing some testing and noticed the inside of the freezer is measuring about 8-12 degrees F (depending on the thermometer used [instant read digital + multimeter with thermistor attachment], but the control panel of the freezer (which reads a thermistor somewhere) shows the internal temp is at 0 degrees F..

Is it possible I've also got a bad thermistor in the unit?

I don't think so. Check it to see if it's open or shorted. It's rare for more than one component to fail at a time.
