Default 1968 GE unit, which is still operational, The fridge is OFF but something is working inside

We have a ca. 1968 GE unit, which is still operational. It has a freezer above the main chamber. For the last 25 years it sits in the basement and is used 2-3 times a year for a day or two.

It has been OFF for at least two months now (there is a dial knob inside with numbers 1-9 and OFF).

Earlier today, I opened it and was surprised that the front of the divider (itís about 1.5in thick and has some vent slots) between the main chamber and the freezer was very warm to touch - maybe 5-10 deg warmer than my hand. I unplugged the unit.

    Can anybody offer an explanation?

    Thank you!

    Hi,

Mullion heater to help prevent moisture.
When the unit is on and cold you won't feel the heat/warmth.

    Thank you so much, Jeff,

I learned something. It makes sense of course, especially in the summer months. I just thought something was malfunctioning and the fridge was about to catch fire.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
