• ** REMEMBER! **The microwave can still shock you even unplugged!!

ALWAYS discharge the high-voltage capacitor first if you even think your hands will come close to any HIGH VOLTAGE components.

Jeff mentions this: Anything in the high voltage ( magnetron, capacitor, diode, wires to and from ):
...Use a metal ( not the shiny chrome type ) screw driver with a insulated handle to short across ( touch both at the same time ) the terminals of the high voltage capacitor to discharge it.

The fan and light continue to run when I close the door, when I open the door the fan stops. The light stays on which Is normal. This just started yesterday. What might be wrong?

Hi,

Door switch, door switch mechanism, door switch key are common trouble makers...would have to be investigated.
Worst is if all of above check ok, then the pcboard is the suspect :(

Hi Jeff, I have the same issue with a fairly new Kenmore model 790.80333310 but probably not new enough to still be under warranty. I see on this and other posts you have pointed to the door switch(es) as the most likely culprit. When I looked up "door switch" on a parts site, it came up with two. My appliance guy will almost certainly tell me with the cost of the parts and his service call, it would be wiser to replace the unit.

My questions are:

1) Is this something an amateur should attempt? I'm not completely helpless but I'm never been inside a microwave either.

2) Should I replace both switches (assuming that site was correct)?

Thanks!

Exact same?

Door switches, door switch wires, door switch mechanisms, door switch key should all be checked.

Most have a min of 3.
2 of one style, and one of another style.

Not rocket science to check...
