I’ve recently noticed the display on my Kenmore range is making a strange clicking noise. It’s been happening for at least a few days but took me awhile to figure out where it was coming from. It is not consistent (will happen like twice in 10 seconds, again the next minute and then not again for 30 min/an hour) but it is persistent (has not gone away since I noticed it). I managed to catch it on video which I’ve attached. You can see it “click” and when it does, it’s showing a brighter than normal 6. in front of the time (so 6.2:50 instead of 2:50). Range works fine, no issues with timer, oven, burners, etc.

Any clue what this is or what to do about it? No repair tech is able to come out until the end of the month at the earliest. I’d like to be able to cook dinner until then but also don’t want to burn down the house.

I believe it is model 790.9642940A (I was able to locate the number 316402715 which seems to coordinate to a specific part on this model). And I’m not sure on the age, just gave my best guess.

Thanks in advance for any help/tips/assistance you might be able to provide.

my Kenmore range is making a strange clicking noise.

What functions are in operation when that is occurring?

when it does, it’s showing a brighter than normal 6

This link is pertinent to your message. It is supplied by this message author.

I don't know anything that could cause that display malfunction besides an internal fault of the electronic control itself.

I was able to locate the number 316402715

That number is the control panel. ie. the panel that holds the electronic control. It is not involved with your complaint.

I managed to catch it on video which I’ve attached.

There is no attached video. I don't know if it would help anyway. Someone might need to confirm exactly were on the range the sound is coming from. If from the electronic control (aka clock), it likely needs to be replaced.

Thanks for your response. When it’s happening, nothing is in use. The display is lit with the time but that’s all. I have not noticed the noise when the range is in use, only when it’s off. Everything seems to be functioning normally other than this random click/flash of the display. Thank you for the link to the part, also.

If the sound occurred while the oven was in use, a separate relay board might be responsible but if nothing else is on, it is likely related to the other malfunction of that electronic control.

You could try turning off the breakers to the range for a minute or two to see if it rests when powered up again. It's only a slim chance but free to try.

I unplugged it yesterrday and left it unplugged for a few hours. When I plugged it back in, I didn’t hear anymore noise until about an hour ago.
In your opinion, is this the sort of thing where I should unplug and discontinue use until repaired?

I don't think that is necessary in your case. It sounds more like just a cosmetic issue if it isn't affecting oven operation at all... unless the noise drives you crazy. ;)
