our Kenmore Elite / LG refrigerator stopped cooling well a few days ago. The ice in the ice box melted and all frozen items in the freezer thawed off. Today I noticed it’s cooling better with items in the fridge feeling cold to the touch but freezer items are not freezing up.
I opened the back panel and the copper pipe was very cold while the round black part was very hot. The plastic fan in the back was spinning fine. There was a lot of dust on the coils and I vacuumed theses off. I’m attaching some photos. We already had the compressor replaced on this unit 2 to 3 years ago. Let me know if you think I should call a company to try to repair it or if I just get it replaced. Thanks

Did you remove the back panel inside the freezer to look at the frost pattern of your evaporator coil?

Look at the bottom photo below, where it says NORMAL FROST PATTERN. Is yours does not look like the bottom photo, but looks like the very right top photo, then you have a sealed system problem, and you'd need the tech. to come back. These Kenmore 795 models made by LG are very notorious for bad compressors even after a couple years. If you don't want to bother with it anymore, then it would be best to go refrigerator shopping.

We recommend Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air for the best and most reliable compressors.

Thank you for the info. I didn’t remove the panel inside but will do that soon. I heard about the compressor issues with that LG model, but what about the new LG models - are they better now?

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I followed the video and removed the panel. I am attaching the photos. Note that for a few months now, this refrigerator generates water as seen in the photos. That didn’t affect its ability to cool in the past. At this point it is cooling a little but not enough to freeze items in the freezer. Let me know what you think.

Yes, you have a sealed system problem, that evaporator coil should look like this:

I don't know if LG compressors are better now or not, I still have very little faith in them.

Like I mentioned above--->We recommend Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air for the best and most reliable compressors.:)
