Have a Older Sears Kenmore refrigerator , it keeps developing ice on the back panel of freezer inside and evaporator coil is like a block of ice.

Defrosted and used blow dryer to get all the ice out. Checked defrost element for continuity and there is. Bought new defrost thermostat but haven't installed yet.

Was trying to check continuity on it by putting it into snow in a bowl and ice cubes will not get colder than 28 degrees ,and stat says on it's case says L47-22F.

How can you test them properly . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

it keeps developing ice on the back panel of freezer inside and evaporator coil is like a block of ice.

Ice or frost?
Ice is more clear while frost is more white.
*If* the defrost heater is good, simply replace the defrost thermostat and defrost control as this would be the best repair.
Defrost thermostat can ohm ok but still be bad.
Defrost control can bind or such and also be intermittently bad.

Sorry frost for sure and it gets very thick. The defrost control you mean by timer? Also is there a test you can do with ohm meter if you can only get the thermostat down to

28 degrees?
