SQ ADG3LRGS111TW01 is 8 years old, gas dryer.

I noticed that the timer wasn't advancing and the clothes were somewhat dry but it takes forever.

Here's where we are right now:
  1. I replaced the timer switch with a genuine Alliance part - no joy
  2. Dryer vent and hose removed, brushed out and vacuumed, short run of only 4 feet directly to the outside and no kinks
  3. Today I watched the burner and this is what it does:
    1. Starting the dryer from a cold start, the glow plug immediately turns on and burner ignites, runs for about 4 minutes and turns off
    2. Burner stays off for about a minute and then glow plug turns on and burner MAY light, but sometimes takes 2-3 cycles of the glow plug, then ignites
    3. This happens over and over again
    4. Timer switch never moves a millimeter
  4. First stupid question: Should the burner always stay on or does it cycle on and off?
  5. Which part would need replacing? I'm already $130 in for the timer
Thanks in advance to the people that patrol this forum and answer questions.

dryer timer not advancing

On what setting? On an auto or permanent press setting advancing of the timer is dependent on heating. To test the actual functioning of the timer set it on a 'timed' cycle only.

No. It cycles on and off to maintain an intermediate heat.

When the ignitor stops glowing the gas valve should release gas to be ignited. If it doesn't the ignitor will cycle again... and again.

No gas being released is most often caused by bad solenoid coils on the gas valve. Either that or the whole gas valve may be defective (pretty rare).

This is the Whirlpool equivalent of the gas valve coils. They are cheaper when you buy in a set (which is how they should be replaced).

Otherwise you can buy each individual Speed Queen solenoid coil.

SQ Booster/Holding Coil

SQ Secondary Coil

Replacing those gas valve coils is likely necessary.

OK, additional info after running another load from cold start, on More Dry/Auto ignitor will fire the burner and stay burning for 5-8 minutes. Burner turns off and will stay off for about a minute. Then the ignitor will glow and burner will not fire, ignitor shuts off, 40 seconds later, ignitor lights again, burner will not burn, 40 seconds later ignitor glows and burner finally lights.

With the same load, I switched to timed drying (50 Minutes) and it did the same thing, burner didn't light until third ignition attempt from the ignitor. The timer is advancing quickly.

If you think it's the coils then I will order, just gotta find where they are. Thanks so far....

Running the unit on a 'timed' setting does not change the heat routine. It just confirms whether the timer is operational or not.

If the burner does NOT ignite after the ignitor cycles off, as I said either the coils of the whole gas valve is likely responsible.

The link I supplied has a repair video. Did you look at them?

OK, I see the video. looks like the coils are right in front of my dryer so this should be easy. I'll update next week when done.

OK, I replaced the coils and all is good. Dryer is running hot and timer advances, all cycles appear to be normal. Thanks so much Dan O!
Saved some money and it was such an easy repair with the coils right in front. Glad SQ had some sense to put all of the gas burner components in hand's reach.
