My Amana NED4655EW1 electric dryer starts but will shut off after approximately 5 seconds. This happens on all cycle types. I have confirmed the drum is turning during the 5 seconds of operation. If I press the Start button immediately after it shuts off, the dryer does not start. If I wait a few minutes after it shuts off, I can hear a faint click and I'm able to start the dryer but it will shut off again after 5 seconds.

That is the symptom of the motor overheating and cutting out on its internal overload protector. Once the motor has a chance to cool the overload resets and will run (temporarily) again.

Make sure the drum turns freely and not hampering the motor's movement. If that's not it, the motor bearings may be defective requiring the motor to be replaced.

There's a repair video of that job at the following link. It may not be for your exact dryer model but that is the motor used on yours so should be similar.

Thanks Dan! The drum does turn freely. I disassembled the dryer to the point that I can remove the motor and nothing else seemed amiss so I've ordered the replacement motor. I'll report back on whether that solves the issue.

It's a pretty simple dryer design. There aren't a lot of things that could cause that symptom.

You'll have to start at the top. When the dryer stops, check for proper power 2x 120 volts at the wall outlet and at main terminal block connections. Maybe there's a loose connection opening up when it gets hot during use?

The hard part is it will have to be done right when the problem is occurring. Waiting until it resets will hide the problem from being found.

Thank you! This was super helpful. It turns out the outlet was incorrectly wired with one of the hot wires swapped with return... the bizarre things that tenants do 🤯
A good lesson in always checking the simple (even if unlikely) things first instead of assuming everything upstream is fine.

I'm glad you got to it. The next testing would have been more difficult to achieve.
