American Water Heater Group, brand is not available from the popup but the company is still in business?
Pilot is easy to light, stays lit ... for about a day. We've only been in the house for a few weeks but I know this was an issue for the previous inhabitants.
This a direct-vent model, with associated standard horizontal vent and intake through the wall. According to the serial it's 27 years young. So although I can feel a backdraft with the combustion chamber open, I don't know that I'd characterize this as a backdraft issue since outside air will always be flowing into that area normally.
Water heater shares space with a gas furnace, however the furnace is a "95% efficient" model that only pulls in air from the outside.
Water heater shares space with a dryer, however the dryer is ventless.
Even the microwave is a tabletop unit (no outside exhaust) and the range is electric. There's no attic fan etc. So I'm kinda ruling out typical negative pressure sources here, although the basement does have a yawning gap above an outside door for reasons too lengthy to get into here.
I've contacted the maker about possibly getting a thermocouple. But the thing is, I don't yet see how to get to it. The lines for the thermo, gas line, pilot line etc go through a slot and not through the main opening into the combustion chamber.
My photos reveal it's had a colorful life under previous ownership: Snipped wire from what? Not a missing piezo starter, because the directions say to light with a match. Pinched thermocouple tube, combustion chamber door held in place with a brick leaning against it.
