Right before Thanksgiving I had issues with the overload start relay buzzing and clicking every few minutes and the refrigerator/freezer not cooling properly. We tested the overload start relay with a volt meter as well as the capacitor and compressor for continuity. I ended up purchasing a new overload start relay and installing it, but have had issues with it intermittently. It will work fine for days and then starts the buzzing and clicking every few minutes. I have been able to get it to start up again after unplugging the fridge for a couple of hours and it will work fine for a while again. I did not replace the capacitor, but should I consider doing so? Or is this a sign the compressor is going bad?

Unfortunately its a sign the compressor is starting to fail. I saw this happen a lot when I worked as a service tech at Montgomery Ward and Sears.

That capacitor is only a run capacitor, not a start capacitor, so that can't be the problem.:)

Time to go refrigerator shopping.

Thanks so much! That's what I feared. I started looking but was hoping to be able to delay until the covid supply delays had subsided. Better to get something on order then before it really dies.
