Our fridge is only 5 years old. Monday night it started running loudly, like it sounded like an old fridge kind of rattly. I didn't think much of it, but then the next day some of the frozen food was slowly thawing. I was also hearing a clicking noise every 15-30 minutes or more. I think it's the relay switch kicking on. From the brief research I did it sounds like the compressor probably overheated for whateve rreason and now the relay switch keeps trying to kick it on to cool the food but it can't keep up. The compressor was also very hot to the touch. Does this sound like a switch issue or is my instnct correct that the compressor is dead/dying and I'm better off just getting a new fridge. Thanks for any help and insight you cna provide!

There's a good chance it's just the start device that failed. That's a very common repair. Before you replace it measure the compressor windings with an ohm meter. Here's how:
