What triggers the automatic defrost? Time the compressor has run, timer, something else? Mine last ran about a month ago. When it runs I can hear the water drop into the catch tray. I don’t see excessive frost - minimal at inside back panel bottom open area and minimal on bottom of inside back panel. Just curious when and why it runs defrost. Thanks!

Hi,

Yours appear to be electronic controlled. This type normally goes into defrost after an accumulated time of the refrigerator running. Could be every 6 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours or once every 24 hours.
Warmer weather and the refrigerator runs longer so it would enter into defrost more often. Cooler weather and the refrigerator would run less so it would take longer to go into a defrost cycle.

Clear as mud!?

Thank you, Jeff! Yes, your information makes sense. I don't think mine is cycling that often. What symptoms would tell me that I may have a problem? I appreciate your help!

What symptoms would tell me that I may have a problem?

Frost build up on the evaporator/cooling coils.
Loss of cooling in the FF section first.
Loss of cooling in the FZ section.
Evaporator fan motor might get noisy as the blade contacts the frost built up.
Refrigerator starts to run longer, and longer and eventually continuously.

I don't think mine is cycling that often

Defrost cycle could be happening now in the middle of the night.
