BCA5105SG-1 Avanti beverage center fried compressor relay?

Brand is Avanti. Checked beverage center yesterday. It was warm inside. Pulled out the unit from under the counter. Fan was running, compressor was hot to the touch. Unplugged let cool down. Upon looking at the relay, i noticed it looked like the connection between the female wire connector and the male on the relay was charred. The wire insulation near the connector was also brittle and hard.

i removed the wire, then the relay and tested the three posts on the compressor for continuity. there was continuity between each of the posts. The relay for the unit is marked QP2-4.7G. Could it be possible that the relay is bad? A replacement is not very expensive but before i go chasing parts I thought I would reach out here. What makes me think it may be more than the relay is the fact that the compressor was very hot to the touch.

Hi,

Does the relay rattle when you shake it? If yes = bad.....if no, might still be bad but not likely.
I see the overload wire also looks like it was heated up = a possible compressor drawing too much current and overheating.

Thx Jeff. Doesn’t rattle. Is there a way to test the continuity? I did test the overload protector and it has continuity. The relay definitely singed at the male post with the wire insulation also fried. could the compressor be good and the relay be bad? testing the continuity on the compressor seemsto be ok across each of the three pins.

Yes, but it can ohm and still be bad.

Yes, but from what I saw on the pics I doubt it.....JMO!

I'd just try another relay and if the compressor runs take a reading of the current draw. The running amp should be approx 10% of the locked rotor amps or LRA.

Awesome, thank you so much for your help. Trying to keep it out of a landfill if i can with some basic troubleshooting. I ordered the relay. I am a very basic DIYer, reasonably ok with a multimeter. I think I actually enjoy learning these things as much as the end result.

Is it possible it needs refrigerant and it caused the compressor to fry the relay?

I will do what you suggest, just wondering next steps. If compressor is shot, looks like i will be in the market for a new unit.

Probably not. With little to no refrigerant gas and the compressor would be using so little current nothing like the relay would fry.

Yes as the cost of replacing the compressor would be higher than replacing the refrigerator.

Jeff, thanks again fir your guidance. Just put the new relay on, plugged it in and it arced/sparked at the post. Compressor shot?
