These dishwashers are quiet. I only mention that because ours has become very loud during drains relative to the quietness of the unit. I checked the impeller and there wasn't anything blocking it and it turned freely. The machine is cleaning fine, draining with no standing water and no error codes have come up. The unit is perfect except for the noise. Thoughts on cause and fix? Thanks

Hi,

Something floating around before or after the drain pump is possible ( bone, plastic chunk, pit, etc ).
Once flushed and 100% sure nothing is getting into the drain pump but the noise is still there....I'd try a new drain pump then.

If needed:

Thanks for getting back to me jeff1! The noise being made is more of a hum/groan than something bouncing around in there unless that something is holding up the pump causing it to groan/hum under pressure. I'll have to check for that to be sure. The pump replacement suggestion seems to make the most sense.

While I have you here, I've had your name forwarded to me as you are near where I am (Ontario, Canada). I'm having an issue with a 16-year-old Kenmore refrigerator (no freezer) model 253.44723100 that may be needing a compressor. I have the issue posted over on the Kenmore fridge page. Without commitment, implied or otherwise, how much would it cost to replace the compressor in that fridge? I ask because replacing that fridge, with all the batsh*t crazy stuff of the past 2/3 years, a new equivalent would probably cost me in the $2-3K range. Asked another way, is it worth repairing? Thanks

Compressor kit came us $560.00 Canadian for the compressor only.....never mind labour, system supply's and HST....probably close to $900-$1000.00 all together.
Seems like a lot on an 16 year old all refrigerator.

is it worth repairing?

If the colour, size or such is not an issue....I'd replace the refrigerator....JMO!

Thanks for your honesty Jeff1! You actually alluded to the problem I'm having, with your final comment, "If the colour, size or such is not an issue ...". We bought the fridge and a freezer together, as a set, because they matched colour/size/etc.-wise and we needed the storage. That's why I'm thinking of repair. However, if the fridge compressor is going, how long before the freezer goes? $1k becomes $2k in a hurry. Appreciate your thoughts, Jeff. Thanks

how long before the freezer goes?

*I* think the freezer has an easier job as we don't open the close very often and has an easier job to maintain 0ºF.
*I* think the fresh food refrigerator has an harder time as we are in and out of it dozens of times a day making the system work harder to maintain 39ºF.

Proof for your theory is my freezer seems (fingers crossed) fine while the fridge is struggling, but I'm sure you got that from the bevy of fridges and freezers you've worked on!

Get a couple of prices from local appliance repair shops on the repair and a couple of prices on a new all fridges and then see what is better for you to go.

The main issue about repairing is "what if something else breaks after a $1000 repair?" Thinking about that, I know the compressor is the most expensive repair but what would come in next? If I replace the compressor, what would be the next most expensive repair that I couldn't do on my own (compressor requires me to call in a tech; braising and refrigerant issues)?

The closest replacement (footprint, stainless, cubic feet and such) comes in around $3000. Saw a Whirlpool at HD for $1800 but the reviews on that unit are horrid. So, a $1000 repair saves me $2000 but not if I have to drop another $3-500 on a new whatever, and another $500 on that other thing, etc. I don't think it makes sense to try and save a 16-year-old fridge but it sure is interesting trying to work through finding out whether it is or not, isn't it????

Anything to do with the refrigeration system. Leaker, restriction, etc.

Thinking about that, I know the compressor is the most expensive repair but what would come in next?

With any luck might be just an electrical part ( fan, control )....but the scary part is a new compressor is like putting an heart into an 80 year old person....the new heart wants to work hard but the other older parts do not or cannot any more.

Being the units will still match, the repair is only 1/3 of the cost of a new one.....I'd take the chance and repair it....JMO!
