Here's something I've always wondered that someone here probably can answer. How do I decipher Whirlpool model numbers? I've done some googling and came up w/this, but not sure if it's right. For example, I have the WRX986SIHZ02 refrigerator.

W = Whirlpool
R = Refridgerator
X = Model series? Release Year?

986 = Specific model within series, higher number = more features/more expensive

S = ?
I = ?
H = ?

Z = Stainless color?

02 = the engineering version, ie. updates made to model during production

Does this look right? One thing I would love to figure out -- Whirlpool and KitchenAid refrigerators share a lot of the same components, eg. the in door ice maker in my WRX986SIHZ02 is the same found in the KitchenAid KRFF507HBS. Is there any way to map Whirlpool model numbers to KitchenAid model numbers as far as similarity?

W = Whirlpool
R = Refrigerator
X = 4-door, S = SxS, etc.

986 = higher number = usually more/different features

S = Finish - Smooth ie. not textured
I = In-Door Ice
H = Original model Year (2018)

Z = Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel

Is there any way to map Whirlpool model numbers to KitchenAid model numbers as far as similarity?

Not to my knowledge.

One thing I would love to figure out -- [do] refrigerators share eg. the in door ice maker

The only way I know is to look up the part of interest on both models and compare their part numbers:

Ah, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Dan. Is there really a Whirlpool appliance out there w/a textured surface? That sounds weird, lol.

Yes, just like an orange peel texture. No fingerprints! It used to be very popular in Canada.
