Unsure of age but a friend's Fridge is a Maytag PTB2154GR*.

We can't find a way to get the freezer to defrost. The cold control dial only offers a "1" option (the lowest) for the freezer and no "Defrost" option. We've set it there but it's just barely managed to melt some of the ice and it's been 5 days.

The freezer works INCREDIBLY well (obviously) but we can't figure out how to defrost it (short of unplugging it totally.)

Is there something simple we're missing?

Thanks for any insight anyone can offer!

This is a auto-defrost model that has a defrost timer that puts it in defrost every 8-12 hours.

So check the defrost timer first.

Turn your defrost timer clockwise slowly till it clicks the refrigerator off, then it will be in a defrost cycle, then give it a few minutes to see if you notice if the defrost heater comes on underneath the coil. Let it stay in defrost for the complete cycle, which is usually 20-30 minutes.

You'll find the defrost timer located in the center of the plastic control housing mounted on the top of the refrigerator section. It should have a small hole under the control housing console#11 that you can put a flathead screwdriver in to turn it.

Your defrost timer is #12 here:

Manufacturer's Number: 68233-3

Let us know what you find.

Thanks, Jake! The only problem (please forgive my lack of tech knowledge) is that I can't quite figure out where the timer is located based on your explanation.

Is it internal? It's obvious the timer must be the bad element due to the fact that the ice build up is so strong. (The fridge was included in a home purchase.)

Thanks so very much for providing the info you've provided thus far though!

Yup, from the diagram above the defrost timer is #12 inside that console.
